Clark Abraham 1726 - 1794 Declaration of Independence signer Abraham Clark gets paid in 1784.

Pay voucher featuring Abraham Clark's signature as "Abra. Clark" at top verso. Paper fragment measuring 8.375" x 3.75" is in fine condition with overall toning, some old folds, some uneven edges, and isolated singed marks. At front, Ephraim Harris authorizes that Abraham Clark be paid 13 £ and ten shillings for congressional service on September 2, 1784. Two docket notations appear verso, the first signed by Clark and recording that "contents of the within certificate" were received from James Woodruff, Esq. on October? 4, 1784, and the second signed by one "Matt. Ward".

The front reads: "These are to certifie that Abraham Clark Esq r. hath attended the Sitting of the Legislature in New Brunswick in the month of August and September 1784, as a Representative of the House of Assembly Twenty seven days for which he is to receive the Sum of thirteen pounds Ten Shillings for the payment whose ? this shall be your ? Warrant given under our hand, this 2 d day of September 1784. Ephraim Harris".

Abraham Clark (1726-1794) was a surveyor, lawyer, farmer, and politician. He was one of six New Jersey delegates to attend the Continental Congress and there signed the Declaration of Independence. This pay voucher dates from the period in between Clark's service in various New Jersey legislative bodies. What was Abraham Clark's working wage? Ephraim Harris tells us that Clark was paid ten shillings every day that he sat in a legislative session. Two years after this promissory note was issued, Clark published a 40-page pamphlet advocating for the use of paper money in the new United States.
