Governor Hancock Orders Town Meetings to Select Candidates for Congress

Partly printed document signed “John Hancock” twice IN TYPE as Governor of Massachusetts and signed “John Avery junr Secy” twice IN INK as Secretary of the Commonwealth, one page, 9” x 14.5”. On watermarked laid paper. Seal of Massachusetts affixed in the upper left. Fine condition.

In part:

“To the Selectmen of the Town of Sherburn in the first District, viz Suffolk, Essex and Middlesex. Greeting. These are in the Name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to will and require you, in manner as the Law directs for calling Town-Meetings, to cause the freeholders and other inhabitants of the town of Sherburn duly qualified to vote for Representatives to the General Court of this Commonwealth, to assemble on Monday, the fourteenth day of January next, to give in their votes for one Representative that is an inhabitant in either of said counties, to represent the said District, in the Congress of the United States of America, to the Selectmen who shall preside at said meeting…” Signed at the conclusion by Hancock IN TYPE and by Avery IN INK.

Beneath this is a second statement, also signed at the conclusion by Hancock IN TYPE and by Avery IN INK.

In part:

“These certify, that the returns from the several towns, within the first District, viz- Suffolk, Essex, and Middlesex, respecting the choice of Representative to represent the People thereof, in the Congress of the United States, have been examined … by which it appears, that the following persons were voted for in the returns from the said District, in which no person has been chosen…”

Thirty-three names are listed, with the votes each received. John Coffin Jones, Esq. had the most votes (814). Four were tied for least (1) including Cotton Tufts, uncle of Abigail Adams. Others listed include Elbridge Gerry (93 votes), William Heath (533), Fisher Ames (8), Benjamin Godhue (2), and Samuel Dexter, Jr. (95).

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
