Gerald Ford's Handwoven Japanese Silk Artwork of World Famous Kinkaku-Ji - From the Ford Personal Collection!
Art

Exquisite handwoven silk artwork from the collection of Gerald Ford, produced by the renowned Weavers' Guild "Goten" of Kyoto, Japan. The silk artwork is beautifully preserved and mounted within a cream matte, which is housed in its original Japanese trifold folio. The folio is made of army green textured paper, secured with a vertical label bearing Japanese calligraphy and a red seal stamp, giving the presentation an authentic and refined aesthetic. Includes its original descriptive sheets in English and Japanese, outlining the cultural significance of the world-famous Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion), and the centuries-old Nishijin weaving technique. Accompanied by a LOA from University Archives documenting Ford family provenance. The matte, which is in fine condition with expected toning, measures 13" x 16.75."

Ex. Doyle, consigned by Jack Ford, son of President Gerald Ford.

Rendered in luxurious Nishijin-ori fabric, an artisanal textile tradition dating back over a millennium, this piece is crafted entirely from silk and showcases intricate detail and depth. The scene captures the stately Golden Pavilion with its tiered, gold-adorned upper floors and bronze phoenix crown, rising above a sturdy stone base and encircled by lush pines, all set against the tranquil backdrop of softly rendered mountains.

Kinkaku-ji, officially named Rokuon-ji, was built in 1397 as a retirement villa for the third Ashikaga shogun, Yoshimitsu, and converted into a Zen temple after his death. Known for its top two floors covered in gold leaf and crowned by a bronze phoenix, the Golden Pavilion is one of Japan's most iconic and visited landmarks. The original pavilion was destroyed by fire in 1950, and the present structure—faithfully reconstructed in 1955—remains a masterpiece of Muromachi-period architecture.

The weaving technique used for this artwork, Nishijin-ori, is a traditional silk weaving method native to Kyoto's Nishijin district, known for its intricate patterns and luxurious textures. The Weavers' Guild "Goten" continues this centuries-old craft, producing silk artworks that preserve the elegance and technical sophistication of Japan's textile heritage.
