President Gerald R. Ford's historic trip to Japan in November 1974 marked the first official visit by a sitting U.S. president to the country, symbolizing a significant postwar milestone in U.S.–Japan relations. Occurring just months after Ford assumed office following Richard Nixon's resignation, the visit emphasized diplomacy, economic cooperation, and mutual security in the context of Cold War tensions and growing trade relations. Ford met with Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka and Emperor Hirohito, reaffirming the alliance between the two nations while addressing concerns over trade imbalances and U.S. military presence in Asia.
