Patton Jr. George

Autograph letter signed "Georgie", 2 pages, on plain paper, measuring 5.625" x 8.875", with a postscript signed "GSP", evidently from George's father.

In full: "Dear Aunt Nannie, I have just got through writing four compositions, about four different subjects, but I am used to that now for I have to write that many nearly every day and it only takes me about twenty minutes for the whole lot. I am on a polo team and practice three times a week, I am the star of the team, and my wrist is so sore I can hardly write from using the polo club. Browney is getting quite thin, and is learning the game and plays very well. When I get off he will follow me all around, the other day the sinch broke but I did not know it and so straightened it with out getting off, then it slipped off the other side, still I did not know it was broken and started off after the ball, but when I leaned back getting ready for the stroke off came the saddle and off I slid on to the ground landing on my feet, and Browney slipped and looked around to see what was the matter. Just then we saw Adilade and Nita coming so I lay down pretending to have broken my leg. But unfortunately they saw me walking around before I saw them and the joke did not work. Saturday when we were resting between the quarters of the practice I gave Browney some loose grass but he could not eat it well because he could not get rid of the roots which kept bothering him finally he put his front feet on it just like a dog would with a bone, and pulled the roots off. Thinking this might have been an accident I gave him some more and he did the same thing. I an getting to read quite well now and often read forty pages with out stopping. We got a letter from you today and the postals with the cherubs on them, they are very pert looking. You won't find me much chainged (sic) when you come back. I have not gained by a very few pounds. We are all well. With love, Georgie".

The postscript reads: "Jan-19-'02 Dear Nan - I hope you will be able to decipher the above vile writing. We are all well and praying for rain. We have had none for more than 2 mos and the country is dried up - It is too bad - as we were getting a regular boom under way. This may stop it when are you coming home? Or have you any definite plans about it. Love to all, GSP".
