Parrish Maxfield

Brown paper postal cover inscribed overall and signed by American illustrator and painter Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) as "from Maxfield Parrish: Windsor: Vermont." at bottom left.  Addressed to recipient "Mr. S.D. Green: 1421 Arch Street.. Philadelphia. PA." Bearing canceled 20 cent red Golden Gate stamp and 1 cent green George Washington stamp in upper right corner postmarked from Windsor, Vermont. In near fine condition, trimmed to a size of 13.75" x 9.25".

Maxfield Parrish was a classically trained artist who was known for his luminous and stylized illustrations. His vibrantly colored and visually dramatic illustrations for children's books, calendars, advertisements, magazine covers, and greeting cards made him independently wealthy. This postal cover dates from the 1920s, when Parrish had shifted his professional interest from commercial art to murals and landscape painting.

Parrish sent this postal cover from Windsor, Vermont, a picturesque town located just across the Connecticut River from Cornish, New Hampshire. Cornish later gave its name to the Cornish Art Colony. This community of sculptors, illustrators, artists, architects, actors, dancers, composers, and writers flourished between 1895 and 1918. Notable colonists included Parrish, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Isadora Duncan, Daniel Chester French, and Ethel Barrymore among others.

Sharpless Dodson Green, or "S.D. Green" as he is here addressed, was an educator from Philadelphia who regularly requested autographs from notable musicians, politicians, authors, and scientists of the day.
