In part, with unchanged spelling and punctuation:

"Yours of the 23r reached me only yesterday.

I regret that my time is to much occupied that I can only acknowledge the receipt of your note and (?) myself

very truly yours

Geo B McClellan".

In the spring of 1864, General McClellan was in limbo. He had been removed from his command of the Army of the Potomac following the Battle of Antietam in September 1862, and had since then been dispatched to New Jersey under Secretary of War Edwin Stanton's orders. In August 1864, McClellan transitioned from the military arena to the political one when he was nominated as the official presidential candidate of the Democratic Party. McClellan would face off against incumbent Republican President Abraham Lincoln on November 8, 1864, the very day McClellan resigned his commission as major general in the U.S. Army.

Lincoln defeated McClellan 212 Electoral College Votes to 21, and 55% of the popular vote to 45%. Up until the summer of 1864, President Lincoln was confident that he would lose reelection. Yet Union victories in Atlanta and Cedar Creek, as well as impressive soldier voting turnout, ensured Abe's victory despite universal war weariness.
