Massachusetts-born Christa McAuliffe accepted her first teaching position in a Maryland suburb in 1970. After ten years' experience teaching American history and civics, McAuliffe relocated to New England, accepting a Social Studies teaching position at Concord High School in Concord, New Hampshire in 1983. McAuliffe was celebrated for her enthusiastic, hands-on approach in the classroom. Senior and award recipient David Larson was one of McAuliffe's students; he graduated that year.

In 1985, NASA selected McAuliffe out of more than 11,000 applicants to participate in its inaugural Teacher in Space Project. McAuliffe underwent extensive astronaut training in preparation for her mission aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. Appointed the first educator from space, McAuliffe was slated to deliver brief televised lectures from orbit.

McAuliffe, along with the rest of the 7-person crew, perished on January 28, 1986 when Challenger exploded a little after one minute after take-off. McAuliffe was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 2004.
