Philip Sheridan
[Washington, DC], n.d.
Gen. Philip Sheridan Signed Cabinet Card to Daughter of Friend of R.B. Hayes
Signed photograph
A superb cabinet card of Union General Philip Sheridan by. C. M. Bell, Washington, DC. It measures 4.25" x 6.5", with gilt edge and showing Sheridan in side profile looking to the right. Boldly signed at bottom blank margin: "For Miss Mamie Donaldson P. H. Sheridan [?]." Very light wear to edges, else very good to fine.

Mamie Donaldson was the daughter of Thomas Corwin Donaldson (1843-1898) who served in the 19th Ohio Vols. Under Sheridan. He was the youngest to enlist at the age of 17, rose up in the ranks to regimental wagon master and becoming a friend of Philip Sheridan along the way. After the War, he became interested in politics and became a delegate from the second ward of Columbus to the State Union Republican Convention, meeting in Columbus President Ruther B. Hayes. Hayes described Donaldson as: "…one of my personal friends, a young man of talents and wonderful energy."

He later became General Agent for the Smithsonian Institution, for which he compiled the monumental work "The George Catlin Indian Gallery" (1887) on the life and work of this famous painter of Native American subjects. He was one of a committee of six appointed by the U.S. Government on "Commission to Codify the Land Laws"; his contribution was published as "The Public Domain" (1880-84). He also served as Special Agent in Charge of the Indian portion of the Eleventh Census of the United States.

Philip Sheridan's (1831-1888) moniker "Fightin' Phil" refers to the soldier's pugnacity. Sheridan was a middling West Point cadet with a short temper and a bad attitude, once suspended for threatening a classmate with a bayonet. Sheridan began his thirty-year-long military career as a low-ranking officer in the antebellum Pacific Northwest, gaining experience fighting local Indians. Sheridan was quickly promoted during the first years of the Civil War, after distinguishing himself at Perryville, Stones River, and other battles. Fellow Union Army officer and future 18th U.S. President U.S. Grant (1822-1885) promoted Sheridan to command forces in the Armies of the Potomac and Shenandoah. Sheridan had only increased his reputation for ferocity by war's end after scorching earth in Virginia. After the Civil War, Sheridan fought in the Indian Wars. He was promoted one last time, to the rank of General in the Regular Army, just two months before his death in June 1888.
