Gen. Henry Jackson ALS & Morgan Lewis Letters Patent - Rev War Notables!

An autograph letter signed and a letters patent document signed by General Henry Jackson and Morgan Lewis respectively. Both items have flattened folds and light soiling. The autograph letter has some loss at the left edge where the seal was broken, along with mounting tape at the edge on verso. Boldly signed. The document has small separations and tears which have been repaired on verso with tape. Edge toning, chipping, and small tears. Uneven toning and foxing throughout. Boldly signed. Overall, very good.

The autograph letter, 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 12.5", dated August 17, 1806, is addressed to General Henry Knox at Mrs. Carters'. Jackson signs the letter "H Jackson" and provides Knox with a blank deed and advice about how to proceed with the release of property at the Mills.

The Letters Patent, 2pp (front and back), measuring 19.5" x 11.75", Albany, dated February 12, 1805, is signed "Mor:n Lewis" at the bottom center. The document grants a Water Lot in the town of Watervliet to Anthony Groesbeck. With a pink ribbon at the bottom center and docketing on verso. The Letters Patent is accompanied by an engraving of Lewis. 

Jackson's letter in part:
"…I enclose you a blank deed of the Mills &c. to be executed by you and Mrs. Knox, as also I return the deed executed by Mrs. Knox when here of the Waldo borough tracts, and request you to have a more particular one executed, and have them recorded…with the family of the Hays's Release to me of the Mills…It is my advice that the Release of the Mills &c should be executed by Mr. & Mrs. Knox at the same time to compensate in some measure for the irregular execution of the Mortgage Deed from them to you & Mr. Hays…The Deed of the Waldo borough Land is not so explicit as it out to be…"

The Letters Patent in part:
"…Know Ye that we have given, granted, and confirmed and by these presents do give, grant, and confirm unto Anthony Groesbeck all that certain Tract of land under water situate in the Town of Watervliet near the City of Albany…To have and to hold the above described and granted premises unto the said Anthony Groesbeck his heirs and assigns as a good and indefeasible Estate of Inheritance forever…Witness our trusty and well beloved Morgan Lewis Esquire Governor of our said State General and Commander in Chief of all the Militia and Admiral of the Navy of the same at our City of Albany…"

Henry Jackson (ca. 1747-1809) was a Continental Army officer who served as a colonel of Jackson's Additional Continental Regiment, which was redesignated the 16th Massachusetts in 1780. He also commanded the last regiment of the Continental Army, the 1st American, which was disbanded in 1784. Jackson was a lifelong friend of Henry Knox, another Continental Army officer, and was heavily involved in his business affairs - frequently acting as his agent.

Morgan Lewis (1754-1844) was a lawyer, politician, and military commander, as well as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Lewis fought both in the American Revolutionary War and was made captain of a regiment of New York militia. After the war, he served in the New York State Assembly (1789, 1792). the New York State Senate (1811–1814), and was appointed New York State Attorney General (1791–1801) and governor of New York (1804–1807).

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
