Gemini 8 Flown Heat Shield Encased in Lucite, With Display Stand
Relic

An authentic heat shield flown on the Gemini VIII Capsule, launched March 16, 1966. The relic is encased in clear Lucite which is handsomely modeled after the Gemini spacecraft itself. The encased relic measures approximately 4.75" tall, with its widest diameter being 2.25". The black acrylic base stands to an overall size of 4.75" x 1.5" x 3.5". With expected surface wear to the heat shield consistent with its being utilized in flight; otherwise in very good condition. A great example for display! Ex: The Space Collective, Ltd.

The embedded heat shield was flown during Commander Neil Armstrong and Pilot Dave Scott's first spaceflight, Gemini VIII, with the mission to link two spacecraft together in Earth orbit. The mission was for Gemini VIII to rendezvous and perform the docking with the separately launched Agena. On March 16, 1966, the two spacecraft launched and Armstrong and Scott successfully performed the link-up, with Armstrong radioing back to the Command Center, "Flight, we are docked. It was a real smoothie."

Soon after, however, the Gemini VIII encountered a critical system failure which caused the vessel to tumble end over end. It was Armstrong's quick thinking to turn off the entire OAMS system and use the re-entry control system thrusters which allowed them to regain command of Gemini VIII and stop the spin. Following this, the remaining mission was abandoned, and Scott and Armstrong made an emergency re-entry to Earth. Despite the mission failure, the successful docking was a milestone that would prove vital to the success of future moon landing missions.
