G. Washington Signed Discharge for MA Solider Whose Regiment Was at Bunker Hill!
Partially printed DS

A partially printed Revolutionary War discharge certificate signed by George Washington and countersigned by Jonathan Trumbull Jr. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 9.25" (sight), "Head-quarters", June 9, 1783. Signed "Go: Washington," as Commander of the Continental Army and countersigned by his secretary, "J. Trumbull Junr Secty." Within, Washington certifies the discharge of George Denicott, a private solider in the Fifth Massachusetts Regiment. Evident repair at fold which slightly passes through the "G" and "W" of signature, not affecting visibility. Uneven staining throughout, with isolated paper loss near top right corner. The 5th Massachusetts Regiment was first raised on April 17, 1775 under Colonel John Mansfield. They saw action in several notable engagements, including at the Battle of Concord, Bunker Hill, the New York Campaign, the Battle of Trenton, and the Battle of Princeton. In 1777, command was transferred to Colonel Rufus Putnam, who led them at Saratoga. After the War, the regiment was furloughed in New York on June 12, 1783 and disbanded on November 3rd.
