Martin Van Buren was eighth President of the United States, and the last of the presidents to be born under British rule. From Kinderhook, New York, Van Buren entered the political arena via his law career, becoming elected as a New York State Senator in 1812, New York State Attorney General in 1815, and then as a United States Senator in 1821. Van Buren is notable in New York State politics for establishing the Albany Regency, a political machine that was extremely influential in New York State and that linked politically with New York City's Tammany Hall. Van Buren served as president from 1837-1841.

"Dear Sir,

I send you some notes on the subject of Sherwood's proceeding in Col. Troub's cause. My own opinion is that it is better for us to disregard it altogether & not to sanction it by examination on our part, indeed we cannot examine without twenty eight days notice, so that it would be necessary to abandon all idea of a hearing this term if we want to pursue a different course. Under this impression I shall proceed today to the examination of the cause, & as soon as I know enough of it to talk to you to advantage I will call down some evening when we will also decide on something in regard to the Kane business. If you should think different from me in the Troub business or for any reason wish to see me on the subject let John call on [?] me and I will come down.

Yours with much esteem
M.V. Buren"
