Description:

French and Indian War
Massachusetts Bay, ca. 1759
French & Indian War Enlistment Return for a Regiment Under Amherst's Command
Broadside

Partly printed French and Indian War enlistment broadside. Oblong sheet, 13.1" x 8.75", Massachusetts Bay, circa 1759. Reads at top: "Return of the men inlisted or impressed for his Majesty's Service within the province of the Massachusetts-Bay, in the regiment whereof [blank] Esq; is colonel, to be put under the immediate command of His Excellency Jeffry Amherst, Esq; general and commander in chief of His Majesty's forces in North-America, for the invasion of Canada." Lists 16 men with their date of enlistment, former expedition, age, names of their father (if a minor) or master (if a servant), and whether or not they have their own firearms. Trimmed at bottom, presumably at that time as it is identified "a true Return 1759" in period ink. Loss of paper affecting a few words at bottom center. Moderate wear along folds, with small losses. A few repairs on verso along tears.

Jeffery Amherst, under whom this regiment served, became one of the most prominent military commanders during the French and Indian War. Amherst achieved his greatest military fame during the years this broadside covers. Appointed commander-in-chief of British forces in North America in 1758, he led the successful siege of Louisbourg (1758) and the capture of Montreal (1760), effectively ending French rule in Canada.

Levi Hooper, who enlisted at the age of 16, went on to serve in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He was second lieutenant in a company of General Bellows' regiment and later attained the rank of captain.

Additional research may unearth other Revolutionary War veterans on this return.

Listed in Evans (103727) and W.C. Ford Broadsides (1188).
