Description:

Elbridge Gerry
Washington, DC, April 11, 1814
Elbridge Gerry Signed Check in 2nd Month as Vice President
Signed check

Check from the Bank of Columbia, signed in the lower right as "E. Gerry" in his second month as Vice President. 1p, measuring 6.5" x 2", Washington, D.C., April 11, 1814. Check no. 5, payable to the bearer a sum of ten dollars. Professionally inlaid into a larger sheet, measuring 7.5" x 3.5" overall. Exhibits three vertical folds with uneven toning throughout. Expected cancelation puncture at center. Else, very good. Accompanied by a certificate from RR Auctions.

Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814) was an American Founding Father who notably signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, but declined to sign the Constitution because it did not include a Bill of Rights. He later served as the 9th Governor of Massachusetts, but resigned this office to serve as Vice President under James Madison. Perhaps his most prevailing legacy, however, came during the senate redistricting of 1812 when the word "gerrymander" was coined.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
