Description:

Franklin D. Roosevelt 6 Piece Archive, National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis

In 1921, Roosevelt contracted a paralytic illness which was then diagnosed as polio. In 1924, he travelled to Warm Springs, Georgia, in hopes that the permanently 88-degree water would help heal his legs. In 1927, he bought a resort in the town, along with the 1700-acre farm surrounding it. Soon after, he here founded the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, dedicated to the treatment of people with polio. In 1938, Roosevelt founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which became the March of Dimes, to fund the Institute and research toward a cure for polio.
