Frank Hamer, 2 Docs Related to Texas Ranger Who Killed Bonnie & Clyde

Two typed letters, both measuring 8.5" x 11", sent to Captain Frank A. Hamer, concerning oil royalties. The first, dated April 15, 1949, is a "COPY" of an original letter, printed on onionskin, from John F. Dillard to Captain Frank Hamer, Captain Roy Rogers, and James J. Johnson. With a printed signature. The letter relates to a purchase made by Mr. Johnson on behalf of the other men. Reading in part: "…he has purchased for us, in my name, One-Fourth of the Oil, Gas and Mineral Royalty under who tracts of land, one, of 115 acres, and one, of 167 acres…being lands near Marksville, Louisiana…Mr. Johnson has the Royalty Deeds, and stated he would send them to me to be recorded, together with proper Deeds for me to execute undivided equal One-Fourth interests to each of you, retaining a One-Fourth interest for myself…as soon as I receive the Royalty Deeds and the proposed Deed of Conveyance to you, I will execute such conveyances and forward both instruments for record…"

Together with a letter from Roy T. Rogers to Hamer, dated April 18, 1949, enclosing the copy of the original letter and disclosing further business opportunities. In part: "We have just heard from Jimmie Johnson and he states that the information is that there will be a well spudded in on or about the acerage [sic] we have the intrest [sic] in within the next sixty days, which sounds good. Mr. Webb agreed to get me the Geophysics on our interest from a confidential source, and would pass all the dop on to me, and as soon as I get something definite I will pas [sic] it on to you." The pair comes with the original transmittal envelope. Both have flattened folds and light creasing. Soiling and toning to the envelope. Overall, very fine.

Frank Augustus Hamer (1884-1955) was a law enforcement officer and Texas Ranger best known for tracking down and ultimately killing Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. Earlier in his career, Hamer also made a name for himself by leading the charge in Texas in the fight against the Ku Klux Klan; it is believed he is responsible for saving at least fifteen people from being lynched. His distinguished, if albeit somewhat controversial, career led to his induction into the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame.
