Description:

Charles Siringo ALS He Tracked Butch Cassidy, Re: A Visit From Standing Bear

2pp, measuring 8" x 12.25", Hollywood, CA, dated July 27, 1928. Signed "Chas. A. Siringo" and addresssed to Harrison Leussler. Siringo tries to resolve some issues with the accounting relating to his book sales and invites Leussler for a visit. Reading in part:

"…In your letter was a statement of $99.60 that I owe for books. It seems to me that I was not credited with one payment of $47.50 made. In the statement I am charged with $47.50 for books sent 3/7 -28. I have a receipt for payment of 25 books made 3/27 -28. This may be for the charge for 25 books on 3/7 -28. In that case, my bill is $47.50 too high. Please look it up. I will look for you at Apartment 200, Colehurst, soon. I never go out at night, hence come see you between 700 and 1000 p.m. any day. A bunch of friends cald [sic] to see me last evening - among them Standing Bear." Toned with mail folds. Minor smudging to the pencil writing and some staining at upper left corner. 1 inch closed tear to lower margin. Boldly signed.

Charles Angelo Siringo (1855-1928) was a Pinkerton agent, detective, and bounty hunter. He joined the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1886 and began working undercover to infiltrate gangs. His work led to more than 100 arrests. In 1899, Siringo infiltrated Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch and worked on the case for nearly four years. He resigned from the Pinkertons in 1907 and wrote numerous controversial books about the agency. It is possible the book he mentions in this letter was "Riata and Spurs", published in 1927. Charles Siringo would die just three months after this letter was written, and is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery.
