Description:

Four 19th Century Ambrotypes of Varying Sizes in Thermoplastic Cases

A group of four ambrotypes, dating from the mid to late 19th century. Includes:

1. Sixteenth Plate. Measuring 1.375" x 1.625", No place, undated. A bust portrait of a young gentleman dressed in civilian clothes. With impressive sideburns. Housed in a Littlefield, Parsons & Co. Union Case, patented October 14, 1856 and April 21, 1857.

2. Ninth Plate. Measuring 2" x 2.5", No place, undated. A portrait of a seated young woman, photographed with her arm resting upon a table. No maker's information.

3. Ninth Plate. Measuring 2" x 2.5", No place, dated November 23, 1860. A young man, dressed in civilian clothes and looking off-camera. Scratched on the back of the photograph reads, "F.L.D.R." Housed in a Littlefield, Parsons & Co. Union Case. Inside the case reads, "Feb. 29, 1860 F.L.D. Russell. Lieut. 5 Reg Artillery. Died {illegible] the war. Returned by Min. Waterman 12th May 1866 Chicago, Ill."

4. Two Ninth Plates. Each measuring 2" x 2.5", No place, undated. Two portraits, possibly a husband and wife, seated and dressed in nice clothing. Housed in a single S. Peck & Co., genuine Union Case.

The first image has minor spotting. The second has lost some of the black backing paint, distorting part of the photograph. The original image is still intact though. The third photograph has darkened due to age and has spotting throughout. The fourth image has minor spotting to the man's photo and the woman's photo glass has broken in two places. General wear and patina to the gold frames and cases.

Ambrotypes were developed in 1851 and were not only cheaper to make than daguerreotypes, but took less exposure time. Images were made on a glass plate coated with a light-sensitive substance which, when dried, created a negative image. The photograph would become visible when the glass was backed by dark material or black varnish.
