Description:

Muir, John (1838-1914) John Muir signs and inscribes a first edition of his autobiography to an early member of the Sierra Club

His signature and inscription, "To Miss Elena E. Rice with many pleasant memories. John Muir 1913," accomplished on the front free endpaper of his book, The Story of My Boyhood and Youth (Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company 1913) [vii], [294 pp.], 8vo, illustrated with nine plates as well as a frontispiece photogravure portrait of Muir and tissue guard bound in illustrated green cloth boards with gilt-titling. First edition, first issue. Rubbing and light soiling to boards, spine loose, light soiling to several pages, signature page having extraneous writing expertly concealed to leave a splendid appearance, overall very good condition.

A rarely signed example of the first issue of Muir's autobiography that contains the passage, on page 217, with biting criticism of his neighbor's treatment of his half-wit son "...none was bold enough or kind enough to break the blacksmith's jaw."

Elena Rice was an early member of the Sierra Club, which Muir helped found in 1892 (Nora Evans, "Sixty Years with the Sierra Club," Sierra Club Oral History Project, 1976, 1-2).
