Description:

Morton, John (1724-1777) A neat signed document and inscription by one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, John Morton

Signed and inscribed "Cep Corp Committitur", "To Answers, John Morton Sheriff". John Morton as a delegate to the Continental Congress provided the swing vote in favor of the United States Declaration of Independence.

5.5" x 3" sheet inlaid to manila paper holder, 3.8" x 8". Penciled date below signature (May 1, 1767). Signed "John Morton Sheriff". Sheet located on the verso of a document clipped from an arrest warrant. Slight staining and toning.

Cep Corp Committitur is Latin and is used for reference to when someone has taken a body or arrested a body and taken it into custody. The return which the sheriff, or other proper officer, makes when he has arrested a defendant by virtue of a capias. With the inscription on the verso of an arrest warrant, this most probably was his formal signed return for such arrest.

A beautiful example of his signature. Morton both signed the Declaration and also chaired the committee that wrote the Articles of Confederation.
