Returning home from Hawaii with 8-year-old Caroline and 5-year-old John, Mrs. Kennedy writes to Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp who had been promoted to full Admiral by President Kennedy, "...sorry that time did not permit the children and me to visit any of the installations on the island. John, in particular, would have been fascinated by a real military tour..."

Black-bordered Typed Letter Signed "Jacqueline Kennedy," 1 page, 6.25" x 9.25". [New York], August 15, 1966. To Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp, Commander in Chief Pacific. Part of signature a tad damp stained. With original envelope bearing her printed frank "Postage & Fees Paid," postmarked New York, N.Y., August 17, 1966. Fine condition.

In full, "I do apologize for this delayed reply to your kind letter welcoming me to Hawaii, on behalf of the Department of Defense. I appreciated your thoughtfulness - - more than I can ever say - - and am only sorry that time did not permit the children and me to visit any of the installations on the island.

"John, in particular, would have been fascinated by a real military tour, and therefore, I shall certainly keep your kind offer in mind on a future visit to Hawaii. With appreciation for your thoughtfulness and my best wishes..."

Admiral Ulysses Simpson Grant Sharp, Jr., served as Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet from 1963-1964 and Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command from 1964-1968, during the Vietnam War. He had been promoted to Four-Star Admiral and assigned to command the U.S. Pacific Fleet by President John F. Kennedy. President Ulysses S. Grant's wife, First Lady Julia Dent Grant, was Admiral Sharp's great-aunt.
