Clinton Hillary

First Lady Hillary Clinton TLS Regarding Christmas Present Hair Products: "are you, among so many others, trying to tell me something about my hair?"

1p TLS signed by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton (born 1947) as "Hillary" at center, and with the recipient's name "Dan" added in Clinton's hand above. On cream watermarked stationery with embossed presidential seal at top, and "The White House" cobalt blue letterhead. Written in Washington, D.C. on December 23, 1993. Some paper folds, including a large diagonal fold on left side, else near fine. 6.375" x 8.5".

First Lady Clinton sent this wry thank you note to Dan Rostenowski (1928-2010). Apparently the longtime Illinois Congressman and current Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee had sent Clinton a "wonderful array of Helene Curtis products" as a Christmas present. Clinton asked, "are you, among so many others, trying to tell me something about my hair?"

Hillary Clinton's hair had been the focus of negative media attention since as early as 1980, when her frumpy appearance was blamed for losing her husband's first Arkansas gubernatorial race. Hair-baiting continued over the decades, even after Clinton submitted to make-overs. Fashion critics decried Hillary's hair color, length, and style, and deplored her use of scrunchies and headbands. Clinton's hair, makeup, and clothing were lampooned well into the former First Lady's own political career. In fact, Clinton often used self-deprecating hair humor to appeal to voters during her two unsuccessful presidential bids.

Clinton's correspondent Dan Rostenowski had served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1959. A Democrat, "Rosty" was one of the most influential politicians on Capitol Hill until the early 1990s, and one of Bill Clinton's biggest political supporters. On June 1, 1994, Rostenkowski was indicted by a federal grand jury on various counts including corruption, mail fraud, and obstruction of justice. In November of that year, he lost his congressional seat and was forced to retire. He later  served a 15-monthlong prison sentence before he was officially pardoned by President Clinton on December 23, 2000.
