George Clinton Signed Military Commission, 1789

 

Bi-fold partially printed document signed, a military commission for James Christie, 12.25" x 7.75". Dated "June 15th, 1789", and signed by George Clinton as Governor of New York, "Geo Clinton". Docketed to verso. Expected folds, with small archival support to the fold lines. Overall toned and lightly foxed.

 

George Clinton authorized the appointment of "James Christie Lieutenant Colonel Commandant of a Regiment of Militia in the City and County of New York.: You are therefore, to take the said Regiment into your charge and care, as Lieut Colonel Commandant thereof and duly to exercise the Officers and Soldiers of that Regiment in arms, who are hereby commanded to obey you as their Lieut. Colol. Commandt … "

 

George Clinton served in a colonial militia during the French and Indian War, and later in the Continental Army  when in 1777 he was commissioned a brigadier general in the Continental Army. In June 1777 he was elected at the same time Governor and Lieutenant Governor of New York. He formally resigned the Lieutenant Governor's office and took the oath of office as Governor on July 30. He was re-elected five times, remaining in office until June 1795.   He remained in the Continental Army until it was disbanded on November 3, 1783. He served as the fourth Vice President of the United States, first under Jefferson, from 1805 to 1809, and then under President Madison from 1809 until his death in 1812
