Brearley David 1745 - 1790 Extremely rare David Brearley Constitution Signer war-dated document also signed by the father of Texas patriot David G. Burnet.

Manuscript Document Signed "Davd Brearley" and "Wm Burnet," one page, 8.75" x 8.5". New Jersey, September 23, 1779. Slight separation at edges of mid-horizontal fold. On laid paper in fine condition.

Bill "To The High Sheriff of Essex" for "attending a Court of Oyer of Term of General Goal [Jail] Delivery himself of Deputy 9 Days @ £8 pr Day...sumoning the Grand Jury...9 petty juries..." Total £92.3. Brearley and "Wm Burnert" have signed beneath the following: "We the Subscribers Justices of the above mentioned Court having examined the above Account amounting unto Ninety two Pounds three Shillings... do Adjudge the same to be just and Adequate." Manuscript Receipt Signed "Isrl Hedden" on verso indicating Hedden was paid "Four pounds thirteen shillings and five pence in full of the within account" on April 6, 1785, with a notation that "£92.3.0 equal to £4.13.5 Specie."

Docketed on verso by three officials including "Jno Lambert." John Lambert (1746-1823) later served as acting Governor of New Jersey (1802-1803) during a legislative deadlock which prevented the election of a governor, and represented N.J. in the House of Representatives (1805-1809) and U.S. Senate (1809-1815). Dr. William Burnet (1730-1791) was Surgeon General of the Eastern District of the United States (1776-1783) and Presiding Judge of the N.J. Court of Common Pleas (appointed 1776) during the Revolutionary War. He was a member of the Continental Congress from December 11, 1780 until April 1, 1781. His 14th child, and 10th son, was David G. Burnet (1788-1870), first President (ad interim) of the Republic of Texas. Merchant Israel Hedden later held various offices in Newark including Essex County Sheriff (1778-1785), Commissioner of Appeals (1784-1786, 1787-1788, 1789-1790) and Overseer of the High way (1786-1788).
