Historical Background
The Staats family of Albany, New York, descended from surgeon Abraham Staats (1618-ca. 1680s), who emigrated to New Netherland in 1642 and became a successful fur trader and landholder. By 1679, there were three Staats households within the Albany stockade. By the mid-eighteenth century, the Staats family had spread across the upriver region of New York, and only Isaac Staats (1701-aft. 1775) remained in Albany.
