Description:

Eisenhower Dwight

1p TLS on "The White House, Washington" letterhead initialed by 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) as "DE" in black felt tip pen near bottom. Cream Whitings Woven Linen watermarked paper is in near fine condition, with expected paper folds, the page measuring 6.875" x 8.875". Accompanied by a matching White House postmarked envelope bearing a cancelled green 3 cent National Capital Sesquicentennial stamp, a little weathered and letter-opened at top.

Eisenhower's June 4, 1955 TLS to political supporter and toy manufacturer David Marx mixed business and pleasure. First, Eisenhower praised a "recent 'Report to the Nation'" delivered by his Secretary of State John Foster Dulles (1888-1959). "I agree that he did a magnificent job", Eisenhower wrote. Just five days later, Dulles advocated a hardline against Communist aggression in a controversial speech.

Next, Eisenhower moved onto personal matters. "Mrs. Whitman will have told you that I could use a few more paint brushes." Eisenhower didn't start painting until his late 50s, but he continued it the rest of his life. He set aside ten minutes prior to lunch each day for painting while in the White House. Of the 250 known paintings executed by Eisenhower, most were landscapes. Eisenhower signed his works with his last name, or like we see with this TLS, with his initials. His painterly style was humble and what some art critics might call primitive, but his work was exhibited at the Huntington Hartford Museum in 1967.
