Eisenhower Dwight

1p TLS on custom letterhead with gilt embossed "DDE" and five red embossed stars at top signed by military commander and future 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) as "Ike" in black felt tip pen near bottom. Cream watermarked paper is in near fine condition, with expected paper folds. The upper left corner has a small heavier area of toning and a faint paper clip impression. The page measures 7.125" x 10.375".

On May 4, 1948, Eisenhower wrote a discouraging letter to correspondent Mary F. Naiden, outlining the extent to which he could realistically help her secure future job at Columbia University. "Frankly, I should be somewhat embarrassed if you forfeited any opportunity at this moment in the belief that I would soon be in a position definitely to help you get into the field of citizenship training", Eisenhower wrote. He continued: "It will be a considerable time before I take over any official position here at Columbia and it will be a much longer time before I know enough about the place to make positive recommendations to those responsible for curricular [sic], instructors, and so on."

Eisenhower's "official position here at Columbia" referred to his imminent appointment as the 13th President of the acclaimed Ivy League institution. Eisenhower served as university president   between 1948 and 1953, during which time he was frequently absent from campus. The career soldier and five-star general had become increasingly involved in national politics and international affairs, most notably in 1950 when he served as the supreme commander of NATO. Nevertheless, Eisenhower was committed to a new type of American education that fostered democracy in a postwar world. Attached is Eisenhower's portrait in Columbia blue.

Eisenhower resigned from Columbia University to become the 34th U.S. President in January 1953.
