Dwight D. & Mamie Eisenhower Signed Presentation Photo, With Bonus Mamie TLS on White House Stationery!
SP & TLS
A vintage presentation photo of 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) and First Lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower (1896-1979), signed by Eisenhower as "Dwight D Eisenhower" in black ink along the bottom margin at left; and signed and inscribed by Mamie Eisenhower as "For Josephine Barth with our / affectionate regard / Mamie Doud Eisenhower" in bright turquoise ink along the bottom margin at right. Ca. June 26, 1953. [Washington, D.C.] The signed photograph shows expected wear including isolated stains, gentle wrinkles, and minor chips. Some lightness to Eisenhower's signature and negligible ink smudging to Mamie's inscription. Mounting traces verso, else near fine. 7.75" x 9.5." Accompanied by its original transmittal message, a typed letter signed by Mamie Eisenhower in matching brilliant turquoise pen as "Mamie Eisenhower" at the bottom. On watermarked bifold "The White House / Washington" stationery. Minor discoloration to two corners and toning to the outer leaf. 4.375" x 6.875."

Mamie Eisenhower sent this typed letter signed and autographed photo to Josephine "Jo" Hooper Barth (1896-1980), her old schoolmate from Miss Wolcott's Finishing School in Denver, Colorado. Miss Wolcott's was a prestigious boarding and day school, mostly catering to Western-born upper class young ladies, which had been established in 1898 by Wellesley College-educated Rhode Islander and principal Anna Louise Wolcott, and operated until 1924. (Older classmates at Miss Wolcott's included Buffalo Bill Cody's granddaughter, Clara Boal Benn, and the "Unsinkable" Molly Brown's daughter "Helen" Brown Benziger.) Mamie and Jo met at Miss Wolcott's at age 16 and stayed in touch until Mamie's death.

In the letter, Mamie Eisenhower refers to the signed photo that she is forwarding to Jo, and included in this lot: "I am sending along with this note a picture of Ike and me which we've autographed to you… How I wish we could get together with all our old friends and have a real chat."
