Dwight D. Eisenhower TLS On Religion
TLS
A 1p typed letter boldly signed by Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), then in his role as Supreme Allied Commander of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, and future 34th U.S. President, as "Dwight D Eisenhower" at center right. October 24, 1944. [New York, New York.] On a leaf of stationery with "Supreme Headquarters/ Allied Expeditionary Force / Office of the Supreme Commander" letterhead. Unevenly moderately toned, with a central horizontal paper fold. A small snag to the upper left corner. Else very good to near fine. 6" x 8." Accompanied by its original matching "Supreme Headquarters" transmittal envelope with Eisenhower's return address typed as "General Dwight D. Eisenhower / APO 757, New York, N.Y." at upper left. Bearing two handstamps, as well as the signature and free franking of the army examiner. Neatly letter-opened.

General Eisenhower wrote this thank-you letter to Mr. and Mrs. J. Ross Lebold of Springfield, Ohio, for having sent him a book of Psalms, probably on the occasion of his 54th birthday on October 14th. "It was very thoughtful of you to send me such a fine Psalms Book. Thank you so much," Eisenhower wrote.

One of Eisenhower's favorite books (in addition to works by William Shakespeare and Mark Twain) was the Bible. Years later, as President-Elect, Eisenhower selected Psalm 127:1, "Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain" to inform his 1953 Inauguration; and even later, for his 1957 Inauguration, Psalm 33:12, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance."

But during most of his life prior to assuming the presidency, Eisenhower was famously reticent about his religious beliefs. Eisenhower was exposed to two types of organized religion during his childhood: that of Pennsylvania Dutch Mennonites, and that of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Most historians suggest that Eisenhower, as a career soldier, felt at odds with the non-violence espoused by both. Thus Eisenhower was not really religious and when he did practice, he was attracted to the universalist and non-denominational. All of this changed during his later political life. Eisenhower joined the Presbyterian Church (where his beloved wife Mamie had been a lifelong member) just days after his first inauguration, and became a zealous believer.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower served as the Supreme Allied Commander of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, a military alliance between sixteen Allied countries including the United States and United Kingdom, between the organization's inception in December 1943 to its disbanding in mid-July 1945. He later served as president between 1953-1961.
