Diego Rivera signed Mexican art gallery card

Mexico City art gallery card signed by modern artist Diego Rivera (1886-1957) as "Diego Rivera" verso. Also dated in the artist's hand "Julio [July] 21 1941". The card also reads: "Cadoro, G. Grether, Avenida Madero 56, Mexico, D.F., Tel. Ericsson 12-21-33, Objects of Art, Gift Items, Frames, Pictures, Jewelry, Antiques". In very good condition, with several toning spots recto. Overall it measures 3.875" x 2.375".

In the summer of 1941, Diego Rivera had just remarried third wife and fellow Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) after a 13-month-long separation. Rivera had also just completed the Pan American Unity mural in the City College of San Francisco library. The 77' x 24' mural depicting notable Pan American artists, scientists, inventors, and statesmen had been a keystone of the Treasure Island's Golden Gate International Exposition "Art in Action" initiative.

Diego Rivera, the leading figure of the mid-20th century Mexican muralist movement, drew on many artistic and intellectual sources. Rivera admired the simplicity and abstraction of the Cubist and Post-Expressionist Schools. He self-identified as Jewish, and also incorporated Mayan and Aztec iconography into his art. Last, the left-leaning artist often valorized the proletariat in his works. Between 1922-1953, Rivera completed murals in New York City, Detroit, San Francisco, and throughout central Mexico.
