Single page manuscript document signed on laid paper, 8" x 12.5". Dated "September 5th, 1792", and signed by Samuel Huntington as "Sam Huntington" as Governor of Connecticut.Docketed to verso. Expert restoration by a paper conservator to separations at folds, and trivial intact edge tears not affecting text. Expected folds with slight foxing, else near fine with strongly contrasting ink.


Jurist, statesman, and Patriot in the American Revolution, Samuel Huntington as Governor of Connecticut signs "General Orders for the Cavalry" requesting a cause correct return. The document is shown in full below and was scripted on letterhead of State Of Connecticut :

"The commanding officers of the several Regiments of Cavalry within this state are to cause a correct return to be made to the Adjutant General on or before the first day of October next of the Officers and Troops in the several Companies of Cavalry under their respective Commands, annexing to such Return a list of the names and rank of the Commission Officers.

A scarce Cavalry order by a signer of the Declaration and the Articles of Confederation. Huntington also served as President of the Continental Congress from 1779 to 1781, and chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court from 1784 to 1785. At the signing of this document Samuel was the 18th Governor of Connecticut, a position he held from 1786 until his death.
