Description:

Irving Washington 1783 - 1859 Lovely dated Washington Irving signature clip with portrait engraving
Signature clip, 3.75" x 2", inlaid to another page of 7" x 10.75". Signed and dated by Washington Irving in full signature of 'Washington Irving", "May 2d, 1857. Accompanied by an engraving of Washington Irving, 4.5" x 5.75" inlaid to a page of 6.75" x 10.75". Both near fine, with some toning.

Signed only a few years before his death, Irving was best known for his short stories of "Rip Van Winkle" (1819), and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820). However, he was also a biographer, having written historical works which include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad and several histories of 15th-century Spain, dealing with subjects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors, and the Alhambra. His passion and expertise in these areas had Irving serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846.

Perhaps the lesser known impact he had on American culture was that Irving popularized the nickname "Gotham" for New York City, later used in Batman comics and movies as the name of Gotham City.

A lovely set which would frame perfectly together.
