Description:

Daniel Carroll of Duddington Signed Lottery Ticket

Daniel Carroll of Duddington Signed Lottery Ticket. The printed lottery ticket is signed “Danl Carroll of Dudn.” Daniel Carroll added “to the people” to the 10th Amendment to the Constitution and assistance he gave Congressman James Madison in the First Congress in facilitating the passage of the Bill of Rights. Age expected with wear. See photos 4.25” x 1.75”.

The ticket says, “THIS TICKET will entitle the Possessor to such Prize as may be drawn to its Number in Lottery No. 1. for cutting the CANAL, through the City of Washington, to the Eastern-Branch Harbour.” Washington, D.C., priorly, was a swamp with canals. Indeed at this time, much of the Washington Mall was underwater. This canal, completed before 1820, ran from just west of the Capitol (adjacent to Pennsylvania Avenue) to the Eastern Branch of the Potomac. Lotteries were popular ways of funding public and private projects in early America.

Carroll was related to Charles Carroll of Carrollton and John Carroll, both signers of the Declaration of Independence. Daniel Carroll was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He also was in the First Congress of the United States. He was later appointed one of three commissioners to survey the District of Columbia and served as one of the City’s Chief Administrators.
