Aaron Burr ALS Famous Association With Eden Family and Martha Bradstreet, Great Content!

Autograph Letter Signed, "A. Burr", 2pp, on one sheet of cream stationery measuring 7.875" x 9.75", Albany, September 25, 1822, concerning various judgments, the prospect of a new Circuit Court in Delaware, and the Eden family. Usual mailing folds with minor separation at some edges. Faint remnants of wax seals at verso. Lightly toned with a few areas of soiling. In near fine condition.

The recipient of this letter was likely Martha Bradstreet (1780-1871), a long-time client of Burr's with whom he frequently corresponded. In part: "Your Letter of the 25th postmarked 31 August was rec'd about a week ago - That which I wrote you about the 20th August must have convinced you that, by one person at least, you had not been neglected...Mr. Williams came to Albany, not on the first week of the Chancery Court as he has proposed, but on the Second - I spoke to him of the Bill; but the Draught of the Bill was not yet complete...Much less, if any at all, will be done at the Oct. term & thenceforth none, until the organization under the new Constitution; under the benign operation of which you may have some sort of Circuit in Delaware sometime next summer...No Judgement in the Eden or Walton Cases...It is not my intention to return to N.York til the middle of Nov, in the mean time Troy will be my headquarters, where, in fact, I now write with an Eden on each side."

Aaron Burr (1756-1836) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the third vice president of the United States from 1801 to 1805. Burr's legacy is defined by his famous personal conflict with Alexander Hamilton which culminated with Burr killing Hamilton in a duel in 1804, while Burr was vice president. After his trial for treason, Burr fled to Europe where he lived in self-imposed exile from 1808 to 1812. He finally returned to New York and his law practice. Later, he helped the heirs of the Eden family in a financial lawsuit. By the early 1820s, the remaining members of the Eden household, Eden's widow and two daughters, had become a surrogate family to Burr.
