CSA Gen. Samuel B. Maxey Expresses Frustration in Waning Days of the War
ALS
An autograph letter signed, two pages, 7" x 9", "Head Quarters, Maxey's Infty. Division, Camp at Beauchamps Springs [Houston, Texas]", May 14, 1865. In the waning - and indeed discombobulated - days of the Civil War, Maxey, left out of the communication of command, writes a letter of frustration to Capt. E. P. Turner.

In part:

"…I. I learned unofficially last night that the [Jerome B.] Robertson Brigade now commanded by Col. [Robert] Gould had been ordered by the Major General commanding this District to Richmond. No notification of such order was or intension has been transmitted to me. I must request that all orders affecting my command be sent to or through me, as it is impossible for me to act intelligently otherwise. Whatever orders are received are always promptly executed by me. II. In the present disconnected [?] condition of that Brigade the presence of a well ordered command of Infantry will have a most beneficiary influence. The other Regiments present are recently dismounted Cavalry. I would therefore earnestly request that Col. Hobby with his Regiment be ordered to join the Brigade without delay. III. I respectfully ask that Brig Gen. Robertson be ordered to his Brigade without delay…".

Samuel B. Maxey (1825-1895) was a West Point Academy graduate and Mexican War veteran. When the Civil War began, Maxey was practicing law in Paris, Texas. Maxey aligned with the Confederacy, eventually recruiting and commanding the 9th Texas Regiment as its colonel. Major General Maxey and his troops did not participate in many military engagements, but they fulfilled much-needed support roles: constructing bridges, conducting raids, confiscating supplies, and monitoring the Indian situation at the western fringes of the Confederacy. In 1867, 17th U.S. President Andrew Johnson's pardon permitted the Confederate veteran to resume his law practice. Maxey served as a Texas senator between 1875 and 1887; this signed card probably dates from this period.
