Confederate Generals John Magruder and Henry McCullough Endorse a Cavalry Transfer

Two endorsements signed by John B. Magruder and Henry E. McCulloch on the verso of a transfer requested by Private John H. Bennett of the 15th Texas Cavalry, one page, 7.5" x 12", Camp Ford, TX, April 13, 1865. Bennett requests the transfer as a trade for another soldier who wishes to be in his current regiment. On verso are a total of seven endorsements, including those of Magruder, who approves, and McCulloch, who adds an autograph note forwarding the request to Magruder. Folds with one small split at right margin, otherwise in near fine condition.

John Bankhead Magruder (1807-1871) had previously served in the Union Army but left when he received a commission in the Confederate Army. Magruder was given command of the Army of the Peninsula and successfully delayed the advance of McClellan and the Army of the Potomac during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. However, his reputation took a hit during the Seven Days Battles and he spent the remainder of the war in a more administrative role.

Henry Eustace McCulloch (1816-1895) was a general in the Civil War and previous Indian fighter who took part in Battle Creek and the Battle of Plum Creek. During the Civil War, he took command of the Third Brigade of the Texas Division while under the overall command of Thomas G. Walker. Attached to the District of Arkansas, the brigade saw action at Red River Campaign, Camden Expedition and the Battle of Milliken's Bend.
