Description:

"Columbian Centinel" with Pres. Adams' State of the Union Address, Personally Delivered to Congress

An issue of the "Columbian Centinel. Massachusetts Federalist", Vol. XXXIV, No. 27, Whole No. 1743. Printed by Benjamin Russell. 4pp, measuring 12" x 18.75", Boston, dated December 3, 1800. With the printed State of the Union by President John Adams, delivered at the newly constructed Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Signed by the previous owner at the top of the front page. The newspaper has flattened folds, with uneven toning and foxing. Slightly rough left edge. Very good overall.

Adams began his speech by applauding members on their new seat of government, stating: "I congratulate you, gentlemen, on the prospect of a residence not to be changed:- although there is some cause to apprehend that accommodations are not now so complete as might be wished, yet there is great reason to believe that this inconvenience will cease with the present session…It is with you, gentlemen, to consider whether the local powers, over the district of Columbia, vested by the Constitution in the Congress of the United States, shall be immediately exercised...You will consider it as the Capital of a great nation, advancing with unexampled rapidity, in arts, in commerce, in wealth, and in population: and possessing within itself, those energies and resources, which if not thrown away, or lamentably misdirected, will secure to it a long course of prosperity and self-government..."

Adams' speech would be the last annual message directly given by any president before Congress for the next 113 years. It would not be until Woodrow Wilson delivered the 1913 State of the Union Address that a president would personally speak before Congress. Adams' successor, Thomas Jefferson, delivered the 1801 State of the Union Address as a written message because he felt a speech to Congress felt too monarchical.
