Colonial Massachusetts Document Estimating the Costs in Pounds Sterling to Build a Saw Mill 



Autograph Document, in unknown hand, one page, 6” X 5”, [Taunton, Massachusetts], September 22, 1681. Lightly soiled, minor edge wear, else near fine condition.



In full, “An attempt of building a Saw Mill by ye 22:9 ber [22 September] 1681 / ¼ Jon Woodward & Robert Crosman 16£ 10s 09d / ¼ John & Joseph Crosman charges 13£ 19s 06d / ¼ Robert Thornton 11£ 02s 06d / ¼ Nicholas White charges 02£ 14s 05d / 44£ 15s 02d / The first [second crossed out] attempt."



Robert Crossman was born in England and moved to Taunton, Massachusetts in 1654. He was known as the Drum Maker of New England for his drums, and in addition he was employed in making and repairing guns. He also assisted in the building of the Taunton Iron Works. In 1681, he would have been 59 years of age. He had twelve children, one named Robert who would have been 24 yrs., John who would have been 27 years, and Joseph who would have been 22 years in 1681, the date of this estimate. It is unclear if Robert Sr. or Robert Jr. is included in this estimate.
