Description:

[Civil War] Two Sanitary Commission Pamphlets, 1861 and 1863

A pair of two Civil War-dated Sanitary Commission pamphlets. The first is 8pp, measuring 6" x 9", Albany, dated March 24, 1863. A reply to the Committee of the Sanitary Commission, entitled "Relief of Sick and Wounded Soldiers", written by John Swinburne and S.D. Willard on the Committee of the Medical Society and addressed to Dr. Quakenbush, Surgeon General of New York. The second is 4pp, measuring 7.75" x 10", Washington, D.C., dated June 13, 1861. A printed Commission document, No. 3, for a plan of organization on "The Commission of Inquiry and Advice in respect of the Sanitary Interests of the United States forces." With a printed approval by Simon Cameron, Secretary of War. Both pamphlets have flattened folds, edge toning, and varying degrees of foxing, soiling, and ink spots. Paper loss to the lower corner of the second pamphlet, not affecting any text. The first pamphlet has a pencil notation written on the verso that reads, "Dr. Vanderpool will call in the morning." Overall, very good.

The United States Sanitary Commission (USSC) was a private relief agency created by federal legislation on June 18, 1861, to support sick and wounded soldiers of the Union Army. Its president, Henry Whitney Bellows, was a Massachusetts clergyman who sought to do his part in the war effort. The USSC operated across the North and raised an estimated $25 million in Civil War-era revenue (approx. $422.66 million in 2022) with the aid of thousands of volunteers.
