Churchill With Sketch, D. L. George, Clemenceau, Baldwin, Poincaré & Other British & French Notables! 6-Pc Archive, ca. 1900-1947. Ex-Forbes
Archive
An interesting and wide-ranging archive containing an autograph album with original drawings; autograph letters signed; manuscript notes with military content; and signed prints and photographs, ca. 1900-1947, six pieces total. Featuring well over 100 different signers. Highlighted signers are preeminent 20th century British and French politicians including premiers, presidents, and principal statesmen: Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau, Stanley Baldwin, Raymond Poincaré, Edward Grey, and many others. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition. Overall very good. The largest item measures 10.5" x 14.75." Ex-Steve Forbes Collection.

In chronological order, the lot is comprised of:

1. 3pp manuscript notes being naval minutes belonging to Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929), who served as British premier from 1894-1895. N.d. but ca. 1900. N.p. Inscribed on laid oversized sheets of paper. Discussing the British Navy in terms of Britain being able to defend herself and compete with other world powers, while working closely with the British Army. Mentioning Canada, America, Port Arthur, Vladivostok, Alexandria, and the Boer War. Expected wear including flattened folds and a few extra wrinkles. Isolated scattered foxing. Else near fine. 8.25" x 13.25." Ex-Collection of Steve Forbes; Ex-Sophie Dupre (Calne, Wiltshire, England).

2. A 3pp autograph letter signed by Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon (1862-1933), as " E. Grey" on the third page. July 26, 1916. N.p. Inscribed on laid watermarked bifold paper on "Fallodon / Lesbury / Northumberland" letterhead. Docketed on the outer page. Addressed to a correspondent named Mallet, Grey writes that he has been in poor health, and compares the House of Lords to an oppressive shadow. Expected flattened folds, isolated edge darkening, and some partially rusted paper clip impressions along the top edge, else near fine. 5" x 7.875." Ex-Collection of Steve Forbes; Ex-Christie's, March 28, 1984 sale, Lot 156.

3. An intriguing autograph album signed by important politicians, academics, writers, scientists, and military commanders of the era, ca. 1919-1928. N.p. but some signers noted the location as Glasgow. We counted over 100 signers including about a dozen women. The album, entitled "University Pigs" on the first page, prompted signers to draw a pig and sign their name; the often amusing artistic results speak to the signer's world view. With black leather covers and a gilt-embossed front cover, containing pastel-colored pages, with a "MacNiven & Wallace, West End Stationers, Edinburgh" retail label located on the inside of the back cover. Expected wear and weathering to the spine and binding. Isolated edge darkening and flattened folds affecting some pages. Loose pages detached but included. Else very good. 7" x 5.75" x .875."

The list of highlights is by no means exhaustive, and more research is needed!

Clemenceau" in the return address section. April 10, 1926. Paris, France. Clemenceau assures an American editor or publisher that he will never publish his memoirs, sagely noting that sometimes "Silence… [is] more valuable than words…" Expected flattened folds and partial discoloration from a newspaper clipping displayed on the facing page. Hinged along the left edge to a larger sheet. The actual size of the letter is 7.375" x 9.625." Other items housed in the 4pp double-sided scrapbook include newspaper clippings and photographs.
