The 36 year old lawyer and future Chief Justice tells the Clerk to enter judgment in a case. In 1800, Roger Brooke Taney had moved from Calvert County, Maryland, to Frederick. His law partner in Frederick was Francis Scott Key who wrote The Star Spangled Banner just five months after Taney wrote the note here offered. Taney married Key's sister Anne in 1806. During his 23 years in Frederick, Taney practiced law before the County Court, the Court of Chancery, and the Court of Appeals, all in Frederick. In politics, by 1816, Taney was the recognized leader of the Maryland Federalists, and that year he won a five year term in the Maryland Senate.
