Charles Lindbergh TLS on European Aircrafts. Written After Their Escape from the Media Frenzy Surrounding Their Son

Single page typed letter signed, 7.75" x 10", on light blue stationary stock with letterhead of Long Barn - Weald - SevenOaks. Dated "October 7, 1936" and signed by Charles Lindbergh as "Charles A. Lindbergh." Accompanied by a newspaper clipping from the Washington Times, Dec 19, 1933 celebrating the Lindbergh's trip from Charlestown to New York in just under six hours. Fine condition.

A wonderful letter focusing on Lindbergh's review of the English developments in military aircraft, and the forwarding of his mail and trade magazine "U.S. Air Services" to his new address in England. Of added interest is the date of the letter, which that at the time Lindbergh had just moved to England to escape the constant media attention surrounding the kidnapping and death of his son, and the arrest and trial of the criminal.

Letter shown in part below:

"Dear Mr. Findlay,

I have been away from England most of the summer, and have had very little opportunity for writing …

I would like to have the opportunity of meeting Mr. Brewer, but I have been away so much of the time that I have missed seeing many of my friends who have come over from America…

The aviation developments in Europe are becoming more interesting all the time. We can certainly look forward to very active and intelligent competition with European designs in the future.

Sincerely,

Charles A. Lindbergh "

After moving to England, Lindbergh also continued his work in aviation, serving on the board of directors for Pan-American World Airways and acting as a special advisor at times. Lindbergh was invited to tour German aviation facilities and was impressed by what he saw.

Concerned that German air power was unbeatable, Lindbergh became involved with the America First Organization, which advocated that the United States stay neutral in the war in Europe. His position on the war, eroded his public support, and some believed that he had Nazi sympathies. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, however, Lindbergh became active in the war effort, working with Henry Ford on bombers and acting as an advisor and test pilot for United Aircraft.
