Minor isolated foxing along right edge, and especially to lower right corner. Sheet measures 10.875" x 13.875". Also accompanied by a brown paper postal cover signed by Gibson as "C. D. Gibson" in return address. Lightly soiled and trimmed cover bearing two 9 cent red Thomas Jefferson stamps measures 14.25" x 9.25".

Charles Dana Gibson sketched this illustration of "Lucky Lindy" in aviator jacket and jodhpurs just two months after the pilot's record-breaking solo non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris. Lindbergh is depicted joining arms with an elegant Columbia at right, and a jaunty French republican wearing a Phrygian cap at left.

Oliver Herford penned the illustration's companion poem "Our Boy", comprised of six rhyming couplets. Herford marveled at Lindbergh's journey over "Three thousand miles on wings unswerving sped / Thro' ice-barbed winds, o'er moving mountains dread" and delighted in the fact that Lindbergh flew in a plane named after Louis IX-- the Spirit of Saint Louis!

Dana's illustration and Herford's poem originally appeared in the June 16, 1927 issue of Life. The issue, with two starlets gracing the front cover, contained other tributes to Lindbergh, as well as a James Montgomery Flagg illustration of Hollywood cowboy actor Tom Mix.

Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) is best known for his iconic "Gibson Girl" illustrations of athletic, winsome turn-of-the-century women. He was an extremely successful illustrator who became editor of Life after 1918 and eventually owned the magazine.

Oliver Herford (1860-1935) was a fellow illustrator also celebrated for his witticisms, plays, and verse. His work was published in general interest and ladies' journals of the period.

“S.D. Green” refers to Sharpless Dodson Green, an educator from Philadelphia, who regularly requested autographs from notable musicians, politicians, authors, and scientists of the day.
