Lindbergh Charles

1p TLS on watermarked paper with "Charles A. Lindbergh, 25 Broadway, New York City" letterhead, signed by celebrated aviator Charles A. Lindbergh (1902-1974) as "C.A. Lindbergh" at center right. In near fine condition. Expected paper folds and overall light toning. Minor tear along fold in upper left corner. Page measures 8.5" x 11".

Charles A. Lindbergh wrote this letter to Jesse S. Butcher of CBS on November 12, 1931 from his New York City home. The busy pilot wrote: "I was very sorry not to have seen you last Sunday. However I hope to have a chat with you in the not too distant future. At present I am getting ready for a flight over the Pan American line next week".

Lindbergh became an aviation consultant for Pan American World Airways in 1928; his relationship with the airline would continue until after World War II. Between 1929-1931, Lindbergh partnered with Pan Am developing flight routes and negotiating landing rights in the Arctic Circle, Caribbean, and Latin America. It is possible that Lindbergh is referencing one of these trips in this TLS.

Charles A. Lindbergh, a rather nondescript Midwestern air mail carrier, rocketed to celebrity after his record-breaking solo non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in 1927. Lindbergh helped found what would later become TWA in 1929, and legitimized the nascent American airline industry by developing rules and regs and even conducting publicity campaigns. Later, Lindbergh developed a navigation-friendly pilot's watch, and even invented a glass perfusion pump that facilitated heart surgery!

Jesse S. Butcher served as Director of Public Relations at Columbia Broadcasting Systems in the early 1930s. We know that Lindbergh and "Butch" had seen each other recently at a CBS award ceremony reported in the July 2, 1931 issue of the Heinl Radio Business Letter. At this event, Butcher had presented Lindbergh with a medal acknowledging his "distinguished contribution to the art of the radio".
