Candid Moe Howard Letter to Fan: "The 3 Stooges will not be revived"
AL
A letter from Moe Howard to one John Ewaniuk, a lifelong Three Stooges fan. 1p, measuring 6.25" x 7.75", [Los Angeles, California], ca. 1973. Together with a souvenir 7" x 5" photograph featuring the printed signatures of Moe, Curly, and Larry, with additional inscription in Moe's hand: "To Our Friend, John/ Moe". Accompanied by its original envelope, also in Moe's hand, where he signs his name at top left, postmarked May 12, 1973. Features expected letter folds with moderate creasing to lower left corner and light tearing to envelope; general toning throughout. Overall good condition with interesting contents.

Within, Howard discusses the publication date of his autobiography, and candidly implies that the Stooges are likely done making appearances due to Larry's poor health. He also references several people who worked with them on their earlier shorts, including director Delmer "Del" Lord and co-star Christine McIntyre.

In full:

"Dear Friend John-
Your letter to Mr. [Norman] Maurer was forwarded to me. I just returned from New York to home in Los Angeles. I do not plan any appearances before Oct. 1973. My book will not be published until the winter of 1973. I'm still doing lots of writing on it. Most likely Kooks Tour will soon be released to T.V. The 3 Stooges will not be revived, as Larry is pretty ill physically, but okay mentally. Joe De Rita doesn't wish to do much at this time. He will a little later on. No I do not know the addresses of Jules White, Del Lord, or Miss [Christine] McIntyre or Jack Mahoney."

"Kook's Tour" (1975) was a television film originally produced in 1969 and marketed the last production to star The Three Stooges. It was first intended to act as a pilot for a new series, but Larry suffered a debilitating stroke that paralyzed the left side of his body before filming could be completed. It was not until several years later that its director and Moe's son-in-law, Norman Maurer, assumed the responsibility of condensing the salvageable material into a 52-minute film, distributed in 1975.

Moe's autobiography, "Moe Howard and the Three Stooges", would not be published in 1973 as he originally intended. Indeed, he would spend his final days working on it before his death in May 1975. His daughter, Joan Howard Maurer, completed her father's book and it was eventually published in 1977.
