Rodney Caesar

Caesar Rodney, Declaration Signer, Signature

Dated 1776. Small slip removed from a partly printed document, 6.75" x 2.25", Dover; March 29, 1776.

Caesar Rodney (1728-1784), a veteran of the French and Indian War, served in many important capacities during the American Revolution. He is most noted for his dramatic eighty-mile overnight ride to vote for the Declaration of Independence, which occurred four months after this document was signed. Rodney was a member of the Continental Congress, and on July 1, he received word that the other two Delaware delegates disagreed on whether or not to support independence. Rodney rode through the night to Philadelphia, arriving just as the voting began on July 2. He broke Delaware's deadlock by voting with Thomas McKean in favor of the declaration.

Condition: Slip mounted on cardstock, with mounting residue on verso. Document has large dark stain at left, which does not affect signature. Small tear on right side, some paper loss along top edge and lower left corner.
