Description:

C. Yeager Signed 1946 "Air Force" Mag, The Year Before He Broke Sound!

A copy of the May 1946 issue of "Air Force: The Official Service Journal of the U.S. Army Air Forces" (Vol. 29, No. 4), signed in thick black felt-tip pen by aviation pioneer Chuck Yeager (1923-2020), as "Chuck Yeager" on the front cover. N.d., n.p. With soft color wrappers. Light surface wear including toning, slightly worn and repaired binding, and isolated minor chips to the covers. A June 11, 1946 stamp from the State Library of Massachusetts is found on the front cover, else near fine. 48pp. 8.5" x 11" x .125."

Chuck Yeager would have been familiar with this monthly periodical issued by the U.S. Army Air Force, as the U.S. Air Force was called prior to 1947. Yeager had enlisted with the U.S.A.A.F. in September 1941, and graduated as a pilot in March 1943. He conducted his final World War II battle mission in Europe in January 1945 before returning to the United States in February to serve as a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California. On October 14, 1947, over the nearby Mojave Desert, Yeager took his historic sound barrier-breaking flight.

The magazine, which is abundantly illustrated with photographs and cartoons, features serious articles, such as "Unshackling Shanghai," about airlifting the Chinese Army to Shanghai to accept Japanese surrender terms in September 1945; "Europe a Year After," about the progress of European recovery and rebuilding since V-E Day; and "Rockets Over New Mexico," about America's future plans for German V-2 rockets. Already, the focus is shifting away from World War II and towards space travel: "19?? - The airmen of tomorrow, on their flights into the stratosphere, will be decked-out in a pressurized suit, inverted fish-bowl and all…" (inside of the back cover.)

Chuck Yeager served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, eventually becoming a Brigadier General in the U.S. Air Force in 1969. Yeager became the first aviator to break the speed of sound in level flight, attaining Mach 1 at an altitude of 45,000 feet on October 14, 1947. Yeager broke many more speed and altitude records during the remainder of his exceptional career as a pilot, and as an Air Force and NASA flight instructor.
