Chuck Yeager (1923-2020) was a flying ace and record-setting test pilot. During the Second World War, he was promoted to flight officer and is credited with shooting down 11.5 enemy aircraft on the Western Front. After the war, Yeager became a test pilot and flew numerous experimental aircraft for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. On October 14, 1947, Yeager broke the sound barrier in a dangerous, top-secret flight not disclosed to the public until a year later.
