Description:

Cody William 1846 - 1917 Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show wooden wagon advertising panel, with a photo card from his last season

Hand-painted wooden panel, 19.25" x 13.75" x 0.75", from one of the wagons used in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, circa 1884-1890. Devised as an advertising vehicle to draw people to his shows as he travelled from town to town. A detailed color scene depicting men at the left and, at the right, a figure that appears to be Annie Oakley who had joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West in 1885. Faded, could be artfully restored.

Accompanied by the actual photocard which accompanied the tickets purchased for Buffalo Bill's 1916 season. It turned out to be his last. Buffalo Bill and Miller Bros. & Arlington 101 Ranch Real Wild West combined to perform for just that one season. On cardstock, 3.75" x 5.75", it pictures Col. Cody and his facsimile double signature "W.F. Cody / 'Buffalo Bill." The verso is blank. The original 6" x 4" ticket envelope is present. A thin gray stripe along the envelope's left edge indicated in which section the ticket holder would sit.

On November 11, 1916, William F. Cody made his final appearance with his show at Portsmouth, Virginia, and headed for Washington for a few days (which included meeting President Woodrow Wilson in the White House and calling on friends) before returning to his Wyoming ranch. The November 15, 1916, issue of "The Washington Post" reported that "Col. Cody is approaching his seventy-fourth year, but is still vigorous and active. He did not miss a day this year from his show, he said." By the end of November, Buffalo Bill was back at his Cody, Wyoming, ranch. Feeling ill, he went to Denver to visit his sister May. On December 16, 1916, his doctor announced to the press that Col. Cody was suffering from a general breakdown and that his illness was grave because of his age. William F. Cody, "Buffalo Bill," age 70, died at his sister's home on January 10, 1917.
